Theory courses for recreational boating licenses

SBF training theory

All practice also includes theoretical background knowledge. Our boating school focuses on practical training, as the English saying goes “learning by doing”. Educators have found that the best way to remember new things is to do them rather than just hear about them. Nevertheless, it doesn't work without theory, not everything can be seen in our training area and some dangerous situations cannot be recreated so easily. That's why the theory courses exist in order to be optimally prepared for the theory test of the sports boat license (SBF) exam.

Here, too, we pay particular attention to the fact that every person is different and learning is a very individual thing. Some people prefer to learn by reading a good textbook. They can hardly remember anything from listening to the classic frontal lessons, they fall asleep and need everything in writing and in pictures in front of them, i.e. somehow visually, as a book, video or live.

Others only get to page 2 of even the best books and prefer to have someone tell and explain everything in person and like to ask questions. Others prefer to learn in a modern way with learning videos and like to click through websites and apps. Others don't want to stare at screens all the time.

We want to address these different needs. That's why there is the opportunity to learn the theory in different ways. The relevant specialist books are recommended and, if required, you can purchase them from us. The SBF internal theory in particular can also be learned through self-study if you are not a fan of frontal teaching and learning groups. Otherwise, the theory courses are classically available as individual or group lessons in learning rooms.

It is also important not to reinvent the wheel. There are very good apps on the subject of SBF as well as many books on SBF theory, cruising sailing, navigation, engine and boat maintenance and everything that comes to mind on the subject of boats.

In general, we respect if someone prefers to learn the theory through self-study or has already found their own learning platform. That's why all theory courses are an optional extra and not included in the price of the practical courses!

Theory course SBF inland (for sails and motors)

The recreational boat license with the scope of inland waterways is an official license that is required for driving recreational boats with propulsion engines of more than 11.03 kW (15 HP) useful power on the federal inland waterways. It applies to sports vehicles less than 20 m long.

For sports vehicles under sail with a sail area of more than 6m², a driving license (SBF-Binnen Segel) is required on the federal inland waterways in the area of the state of Berlin (except Zeuthener See and Dämeritzsee). In addition, this driving license requirement also applies on the parts of the Lower Havel waterway in the state of Brandenburg from the northern tip of the Pfaueninsel to river kilometer 16.4 as well as on the Havel-Oder waterway from km 6.4 to km 10.2 including Nieder Neuendorfer See .

In the official SBF theory exam you will be given between 25 and 37 questions from the official questionnaire (300 questions), which is available free of charge on Elwis. This questionnaire and the topics covered in it form the content of the course.

The content we cover includes, among other things, legal framework conditions, avoidance rules, lighting, signage, buoys, weather knowledge for water sports enthusiasts, safety equipment and behavior in dangerous situations, sound and emergency signals, boat engine knowledge such as types of propulsion, basics of maintenance, advantages and disadvantages of different types of ships, wheel effect, etc.

Theory course SBF-Indoor: €150

The price includes 3 appointments, each lasting 2.5 hours. (evening course)

Not included: The book “Sportboat license inland sail/motor” by Overschmidt and Gliewe can also be purchased from us.

Theory course SBF Lake (for the sea and coast)

The recreational boat license with the maritime shipping routes is an official license that is required for driving recreational boats with propulsion engines of more than 15 HP (11.03 kW) on the maritime shipping routes (North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts). It applies without length restrictions.

In the official SBF theory exam you will be given 39 questions from the official See question catalog (300 questions), which is available free of charge on Elwis. This questionnaire and the topics covered in it form the content of the course. In contrast to inland areas, for the SBF lake you get another navigation task on the map, consisting of 9 sub-tasks. It is advisable to be shown work with nautical charts; pure self-study is not recommended here.

The content we cover includes the legal framework, collision prevention rules (KVR), lighting, signage, buoys, weather knowledge for water sports enthusiasts, safety equipment and behavior in dangerous situations, sound and emergency signals, boat engine knowledge such as types of propulsion, basics of maintenance, advantages and disadvantages of different types of ships, wheel effect and also navigation with nautical charts.

Theoriekurs SBF-See: 200€

Theory SBF combination course (inland and sea)

Book now!

The theory for SBF inland and sea can also be acquired together in a combined course. But you should think carefully about whether you want and need to acquire the SBF for both areas!

It's a lot of theory to learn at once! There are, among other things, different lights, barrels, signage and legal frameworks between the inland and lake areas. That's why there are 2 different questionnaires on Elwis. For inland only multiple choice questions have to be answered, for sea the navigation task is added to the questions!

The experience of the last few years shows that anyone who writes SBF inland and sea together risks a high failure rate of 30% in the theory. Simply because you get confused between the areas and don't take enough time to learn! So if you don't have much time to learn the SBF theory or if learning theory is generally difficult (slow learner), it's better to take the SBF inland first and catch up on the SBF lake later. Or plan plenty of time to study! Wanting to learn SBF inland and sea in 2 weeks before the exam is very ambitious!
